Luce Prowl — Alba, first light; east glow, no fixture
(01)Albafirst light

The room before anyone is awake: cool, almost colourless, with the polished stone floor holding the only brightness in the plan.

The hour the skylight takes over. The linen is drawn to soften the fall, and the room reads at its flattest and widest.

Luce Prowl — Riflesso, the reflected hour; west sun, bounced off the mirror
(03)Riflessothe reflected hour

Late afternoon, when the mirror on the end wall throws the west sun back across the ceiling. It is the one moment the room has a warm cast.

The curationDescription

One room, four readings of the day: the brightest curation in the house, built to be watched from dawn to dusk.

Luce Prowl is a single composition documented at four hours rather than four different rooms. Nothing moves between them — the light does. Pale plaster, mirror-polished stone and sheer linen were chosen because they report the hour honestly, and because they leave the room with almost no colour of its own.

It is the most demanding curation to specify and the simplest to live in. Two sofas, a long table, one lamp per zone; the interest comes from a west window, a skylight and a mirror placed to bounce the last of the sun back into the room after it has left the floor.

Luce Prowl — Light directive: Three apertures, one mirror, three lamps. The room is a light instrument.
(01)LightDirective

Three apertures, one mirror, three lamps. The room is a light instrument.

An east window opens the day, a diffused skylight carries midday, and a west window with an antiqued mirror opposite extends the afternoon by nearly an hour. After dark only three warm sources are used, each on its own dimmer.

Luce Prowl — Material directive: Pale plaster, mirror-polished stone, sheer linen. Surfaces that report the hour.
(02)MaterialDirective

Pale plaster, mirror-polished stone, sheer linen. Surfaces that report the hour.

The floor is polished to a near-mirror so it changes character completely between midday and dusk. Plaster is kept almost white and left matt as the control surface. Linen is unlined so it glows rather than blocks.

Luce Prowl — Form directive: Low and wide, so nothing interrupts the light crossing the room.
(03)FormDirective

Low and wide, so nothing interrupts the light crossing the room.

Sofa backs stay at 620mm and the long table is the only tall element in the plan. Furniture is held away from all three apertures, which is what allows the light to travel the full depth of the room uninterrupted.

Luce Prowl — Furniture directive: Ivory bouclé everywhere, ash where a frame must show.
(04)FurnitureDirective

Ivory bouclé everywhere, ash where a frame must show.

A single ivory bouclé runs across two sofas, ten chairs and a pair of swivel armchairs, so the room has one tone and the hour supplies the rest. Alabaster lamps are the only objects; there is no art on any wall except the mirror.
