Silva Verde — Sottobosco, the understorey; dappled daylight, no fixture
(01)Sottoboscothe understorey

The entry is planted on both sides so you walk through green before you see any furniture. The floor is timber laid in a single direction to keep the passage quick.

The curationDescription

Planting treated as a material, not decoration: timber, shade and enough green mass to change the temperature of the room.

Silva Verde is the only curation in the house where a living thing is load-bearing. Four mature specimens are placed first, and the furniture is arranged in the shade they throw — which is why the room feels cooler than the rest of the floor without a single change to the air conditioning.

Everything hard is timber: floor, joinery, table and frames, all in one species so the green has nothing to compete with. Textiles are undyed and loosely woven, so the light that filters through the leaves keeps moving across them.

Silva Verde — Light directive: Daylight filtered through leaves. One lamp for after dark, nothing more.
(01)LightDirective

Daylight filtered through leaves. One lamp for after dark, nothing more.

The planting is placed to break the light before it reaches the seating, which is what makes the room read cool. After dark a single floor lamp at 2700K lights the clearing only; the planted edges are left in shadow rather than uplit.

DaylightFiltered through four specimensEveningOne floor lamp, no plant uplighting
Silva Verde — Material directive: One timber everywhere. Terracotta for the pots, linen for everything soft.
(02)MaterialDirective

One timber everywhere. Terracotta for the pots, linen for everything soft.

Ash is used for floor, table, frames and joinery so the eye reads a single wood tone and the green sits against one background. Pots are unglazed terracotta and left to weather; nothing is painted anywhere in the plan.

Silva Verde — Form directive: Plant first, furnish second. Seating sits inside the shade, not around the walls.
(03)FormDirective

Plant first, furnish second. Seating sits inside the shade, not around the walls.

The four specimens are set before any furniture is placed, and the seating circle is drawn inside their canopy. The result is a room with a middle, which is unusual and is the entire point of this curation.

Silva Verde — Furniture directive: Undyed linen and paper cord. Loose covers, because leaves drop.
(04)FurnitureDirective

Undyed linen and paper cord. Loose covers, because leaves drop.

Every soft piece has a removable undyed linen cover, chosen so the room can be maintained rather than protected. Chairs are woven paper cord: light enough to move when the planting is watered.
